Literary Translation Bio (150 words)

Andrew Hodges is a cultural anthropologist turned fiction editor and literary translator. They earned a PhD in social anthropology from the University of Manchester in 2013, and lived in Croatia from 2008–2018. Andrew published an ethnography of queer/left-wing ultras in Croatia (Routledge, 2018) and co-authored a shipyard ethnography (University of Toronto Press, 2024). Andrew’s translation of Kristina Gavran’s novel Izmedju was published in Relations and longlisted for the John Dryden Translation Competition. They also edited a new English edition of Marija Jurić Zagorka’s Croatian Tales of Long Ago (Znanje, 2024). Other translations include Andrea Matošević’s Almost, But Not Quite Bored in Pula (Berghahn, 2021) and Davor Konjikušić’s Red Glow (De Gruyter, 2022). Andrew edits bestselling commercial and literary fiction titles for various US and UK publishers. They live in a village outside Edinburgh, where they enjoy trail running and mushroom foraging.

Andrew Hodges, PhD, is a cultural anthropologist turned developmental editor, line editor, and writing coach. They specialize in speculative fiction and cultural anthropology.

​

As an anthropologist, they wrote about marginalized astrophysicists and queer hooligans. These days, they edit the speculative weird and cultural anthropology books that center marginalized perspectives and groups.

 

Editorial clients have included Big 5 presses, top academic and trade presses, and numerous independent authors and anthropologists. They're a member of the Editorial Freelancers Associationthe Society of Authors, and the British Fantasy Society.
