Book editing for speculative fiction authors

Stuck on your latest novel and unsure what to do next? Or trying out a new genre?

I'm a book editor of fiction who specializes in YA and adult speculative fiction (especially fantasy), LGBTQ+ fiction, and romance. I also work with literary or experimental fiction.

I've worked with New York Times bestselling authors, Hugo finalists, Big 5 presses, and numerous querying or self-publishing authors.

Vincent Burke, Queer Fantasy Romance Author
"The editorial report was one of the greatest feedback tools I have ever received, as it covered so many aspects that, as as the author, I tended to gloss over."
Michael Fellowes, SF Horror Author
"Andy is an excellent editor. He gives more than a standard line/copy edit. He helped clarify povs and the timeline for Scarlet and the White to make this a better and easier book to read."

Nathan Wagner, Speculative Western Author
"Working with Andy made my debut novel better, and the results in distribution and reviews prove it."

What I work on:
I edit only in genres I read in widely. These are: fantasy fiction, science fiction, horror, thrillers, novels about the LGBTQ+ experience, and novels with social justice themes. The books I work on include YA and adult genre fiction, upmarket fiction, and literary fiction.

I never edit: crime fiction, historical fiction, Christian fiction, erotica, or AI-generated or doctored texts.

Manuscript critiques
A developmental edit or manuscript critique involves identifying big-picture issues with your novel, including problems with:
-
Genre
-
Audience
-
Point of view and perspective
-
Dialogue and internalization
-
Plot
-
Pacing
-
Characterization
-
Character arcs
-
Setting and worldbuilding
-
Culture and representation
-
Messaging, themes, and subtexts

It does not involve improving your writing at sentence level, and I won't give you feedback on issues like typos and comma placement.

A manuscript critique is a solid, affordable first step – and for many people, it's all they need.

You will receive:
-
A report of ten to twelve pages covering the 3–5 biggest developmental issues I noticed in your novel. The report includes possible tips on how to revise the manuscript.
-
Half an hour of support via email or Zoom after I deliver the report. You can purchase extra support hours at £60 per hour.

Cost: £300 + £7.90 per 1000 words

Partials: Need some early feedback? You can send me the first 10,000 words of your novel, and pick one of the options:

-
Editorial report (1000–1500 words): £200
-
Editorial report (1000–1500 words) + detailed manuscript comments: £300
Developmental Edit

Need more developmental feedback than a manuscript critique offers? This is perfect for authors who need more targeted interventions than the big-picture feedback a manuscript critique offers.

You'll receive:
-
a detailed editorial report after the second read through (usually fifteen to twenty pages)
-
a revision plan as part of the enhanced report
-
detailed comments on your manuscript (around one per page)
-
an hour of online coaching or support via Zoom.
Cost: From £28 per 1000 words (min. 60,000 words)
I can also quote in EUR or USD.
You can also purchase this service as an add-on after a manuscript critique.

All manuscript evaluations begin with a short online consultation. If you don't think I'm the right fit for your project, I will offer you a full refund after the call, no questions asked.

How long will it take?

We'll agree the schedule in advance. I tend to book up around two to three months in advance. I'll give you a firm deadline before starting work.
